Why Does Harvest...?
Why Does Harvest say "You Are Loved" at the end of every service?
Churches can very easily become places where there are so many sayings that it can be a little much can’t it? You may even find yourself saying things that aren’t completely clear in what they really mean.
I hope that this phrase you hear at the end of every service at Harvest doesn’t become an empty phrase like that.
We are a church that is incredibly passionate and urgent about God’s Word. But it’s not just the book we love, it’s the application of what God’s Word says. We don’t worship the pages, we worship the God revealed to us in those pages.
Every week, as we gather together to proclaim the authority of God’s Word, we are doing so without a lot of fluff. There isn’t a lot of complexity to how we do what we do. We open up God’s Word and we look at what it says and then we talk through how we can make sure we are aligning our lives in obedience.
In doing that, our focus can easily become so fixated on the future of who we should be and it’s for that reason that we close each service with the simple phrase: You Are Loved.
It’s a reminder for every person that right now you are loved, and there are no “ifs”. We don’t say, “And if you do all this, you are loved” or “If you make sure you try a lot harder this week, you are loved”.
It’s not that at all.
Right here and right now, you are loved. Being loved by God is not a reward for obedience, it is the source of our obedience. We obey because we are loved, not to be loved.
Look at this verse in 1 John 2:1,
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Isn’t that awesome? John doesn’t say “If you sin, you’re toast. God is going to get you back for what you did”. It’s not a threat in any way. It’s a call to be reminded that even in our mistakes and shortcomings, we are loved.
Allow that truth to wash over you. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, just spend a minute thinking of how loved you are by the eternal, forever, all-knowing, all-powerful, God.
Let that be what drives you today.
I love you Harvest, and look forward to worshipping with you Sunday.
You Are Loved,
