The National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 1, and encourages believers to pray in unity for America. This year’s theme is Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
In recognition that our government officials, communities, families, and the church all play a role in our country, we invite you to pray with the following prompts and verses throughout the day.
Pray that our government officials will lead with wisdom and integrity.
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:1-4 ESV
“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Proverbs 29:2
“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” Proverbs 10:9
Pray for the President, Vice President, Members of the President’s Cabinet, Members of Congress, Supreme Court Justices, Governors, State Legislators, County Officials, and City Officials
Pray that our families and communities will flourish.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.’ Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:1-4
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:7
Pray that the church will reflect Christ and make Him known.
Through the way we love: “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” Romans 12:9-10
Through the way we conduct ourselves: “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” 1 Peter 2:11-12
Through our utter dependence on Christ: “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.” Philippians 3:8-11
